Dr. Helen Slater Stokes's practice as a glass artist explores how we perceive and emotionally respond to space, working at the intersection of illusion, materiality, and visual perception. Drawing on extensive research through her PhD at the Royal College of Art, her work investigates how spatial images can be constructed within glass's unique optical properties. Using traditional and contemporary spatial illusionary techniques, she creates works that evoke virtual three-dimensional forms within solid glass structures. Through lenticular and lens-based techniques, she constructs images that shift with viewer movement, inviting contemplative engagement. Her practice explores tension between emotional and rational, representational and abstract, visible and illusory.
