Franklin’s Terror: Lichen

£2,750.00
Description

Franklin’s Terror refers to Sir John Franklin’s 1845 search for the North-West Passage aboard the Terror and Erebus. After both ships disappeared, years of rescue attempts uncovered only fragments of evidence. In 1854, the Scottish explorer Dr John Rae learned from Inuit hunters that the crews had become trapped in the ice and perished from starvation, disease and exposure, with some reportedly resorting to cannibalism in their final attempts to survive. His account was widely condemned by Victorian society but was ultimately vindicated many years later. James’ work reflects on this tragic expedition and the human cost of exploration.
