The Drayton Egg (Re-Imagined)
Description
Working predominantly with hot glass, James Maskrey creates factual and imagined objects that often take the form of singular artefacts or curated collections of curiosities. This piece is inspired by the history of ‘The Drayton Egg’, discovered on an ice floe during a French Antarctic expedition in 1840 and was subsequently bought by Lord Drayton and kept at Drayton Hall in Norwich. Its mysterious origins were only clarified following the collection of Emperor penguin eggs during Scott’s Terra Nova expedition of 1911 - a journey marked by extraordinary endurance and tragic loss.
