Christmas baubles have a peculiar power:they can turn a humble fir into something verging on the magical, as candlelight and fairy lights dance across their curved surfaces. It’s little wonder these merry mainstays have long transcended their role as mere decorations.
The small glass spheres spend the vast majority of the year safely stowed away, and when they do come out, they’re handled with utmost ritualistic care. That’s partly due to their delicate nature – which arguably adds to the fleeting magic of the holiday season – but also because traditional baubles, blown by hand, were once (and still are) expensive luxury objects, passed down through generations.
As mass-produced plastic ornaments continue to flood the market, those treasured pieces that once belonged to our grandparents and great-grandparents grow richer in sentimental value. So cherish the heirlooms you have and, as you decorate your tree, think of the loved ones who hung them before you.
And if you’re tempted, begin your own legacy: invest in baubles that will one day be passed down with the same affection. We’ve gathered 10 exquisite ornaments from beloved British heritage brands and makers – the kind your (future) grandchildren will happily squabble over. - by Wanda Sachs
