“As an inveterate beachcomber I look for inspiration wherever I am – it doesn’t have to be the beach. I am often seen scavenging from our studio floor, picking up gloriously coloured small offcuts from the blowing process. Many of these spark some new direction in my work. So its not difficult to imagine how inspiring I have found the Jurassic coastline in Devon. Found objects such as pebbles, shells and ammonites provide wonderful and enduring sources for development into free blown forms.
For this COLLECT 2022 exhibition I have worked with two primary colour ways: Marrakech orange and blue, drawn from a visit to the magnificent Majorelle gardens in Marrakech; and an indigo series inspired by my trips to Japan, where the colours of the textiles I saw made a lasting impression on me.” – Peter Layton
