taglio-ii
Taglio II

Taglio is an Italian word meaning ‘to cut’, referring to the distinctive carved pattern that defines these works. Although the technique is associated with Italian glassmaking, the Graal process used here was originally developed in Sweden and has become an important part of the international studio glass movement.

To create each piece, Bruce first blows a blank of layered, coloured glass. Once cooled, the surface is carved with diamond wheels, cutting through the layers to reveal the colours beneath and create the intricate pattern. The piece is then carefully reheated, reattached to the blowing iron and blown once more, transforming the carved blank into its final form.

For this body of work, Peter asked Bruce to develop new shapes and enrich the colourways, resulting in a fresh interpretation of the Taglio technique. The works reflect the rich and varied influences of the international studio glass movement, while bringing together Peter’s direction and Bruce’s technical skill and sensitivity to the material.

Freeblown glass

H28 x W15 x D15cm
