An invitation to create work to accompany the Royal Academy’s show on Abstract Expressionism provided the impetus to develop this series. The immediacy and spontaneity of Action Painting, emphasising the importance of process, material and gesture chimed with my approach to working with hot glass. Just as Jackson Pollock’s organic drips and splash technique captured the painter’s search for a vital form of expression, so glassblowing freezes a moment of discovery. Instant decisions regarding process and change record the controlled chance and drama of hot glassworking.
