Nexus
The word ‘Nexus’ is defined as ‘a connection or interface between two, or more states’. The idea of a theoretical barrier is at the very heart of existence. From the biological barrier between cellular membranes, to the cosmic barrier separating the unknown architecture of a black hole from the rest of space time. Scala wanted this piece to be a visual representation of that barrier, yet at the same time, have the barrier be an vital and integral connection. A scaffold as it were, holding the piece together. The technical difficulties in creating such a piece were evident from the outset. Each component needed to be crafted with mathematical precision, in order for the sculpture to work as a whole. Every length and angle calculated, then meticulously recreated in glass.
