“Visiting the Great Barrier Reef was one of the visual highlights of my life. In an attempt to capture and express some of the delights of that experience, I developed my series Reef.

I wanted to convey an abstracted scene of towering rocks, seaweed and teeming colourful fish. It was a forgotten experimental piece which sparked the idea for Black Reef.

I hope this series will continue to be a reminder that our ailing reefs are endangered and in need of care." - Peter Layton
