‘There is a fight going on to convince governments and industry that climate change on this planet has to be dealt with and reversed now and the environment cared for. But as we look to care for this planet Earth there are those who are looking much further away across the Solar System to planetary bodies that also need to be protected, especially, from those who have little care for our world and the worlds that surround us.
With this piece, The Red Planet, I explore these questions through the body language of the figure. The figure is slightly ambiguous, is he or she looking to nurture The Red Planet or to plunder it. Being an optimist I believe the figure is struggling to protect. Using the lost wax casting technique I have formed the figure in glass with colours from my own palette and combined it with a painted wood base.’ – David Reekie
