A few years ago we organised an exhibition entitled ‘VETRO: Exploring the Venetian Influence’, not to copy but rather as an homage to centuries of history, tradition, skill and creativity. Our aim was to invent our own new ways to characterise or convey an Italian idiom or style.
Peter says, “I enjoy the challenge of working to a theme and this title provided great stimulus and inspiration. It required developing extremely labour intensive and time-consuming colour preparation techniques to create the complex patterns and visual detail that I wanted to achieve. Near Murano lies the pretty island of Burano, well known for its tradition of lace-making. My series, Burano, is a play on both traditional Venetian filigree work and Moire patterns to create a lace-like net that envelops a coloured bubble and is reflected within the mass of clear glass that forms part of the ‘sailform’ vessel.”
