Sally Fawkes

'Each piece is a timeless, associative narrative, with many possible outcomes...'

Meet Sally Fawkes

Sally holds a First Class Honours degree in 3D Design-Glass from Surrey Institute of Art and Design, UK and has received several awards for research and development from both the Arts Council and Crafts Council of England. She has worked as a professional artist maker since 1999 and is a member of the Royal Society of Sculptors. She has lectured at UK universities at The Royal Danish Academies of Fine Art and Design for 14 years, Denmark at their specialist glass and ceramics department on the island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea.

About the Work

Sally often researches at sea around the Arctic coastline of northern Norway recording the complexities of the constantly shifting mood of the environment and the entwined relationship between humankind and nature.
Sally’s ‘Eternal Exchange’ series has evolved from her voyages, experiences of earthly, unearthly places. High above the Arctic Circle, Fata Morgana mirages are a common sighting at sea. In this series of cast glass objects, various forms and scales have emerged. Hand carved internal protrusions have subtle variations, some are pronounced, some eroded, others disappear from sight. Mercurial space, always in motion, created by hand mirroring on polished curved planes opens up new dimensions, at times remote, that seemingly were not there before. Layered, textured outer polychromatic painted surfaces, rich in their visual absorption are alluringly tactile. Each piece is a timeless, associative narrative, with many possible outcomes.
