Atlantis

Over the years ecological concerns have loomed large in Peter Layton’s work.  Pyramidal forms occur as crystalline structures in nature and for millennia they have also possessed significant symbolic value.   In Peter’s work they have recurred in various contexts and with diverse forms of expression.

Small and compact, these current solid forms are manipulated in molten glass.  The Zen-like loss of control of their interior complexity and random colour dispersion contrasts sharply with their highly structured cut and polished exterior form.  They pose the question as to how one can invest small evocative objects with a deeper message.  Peter's Icecaps and Atlantis series are intended as subtle reminders of the risks we are taking with our precious future.
